For City Charter Commission
Recent events have called attention to the need to examine City government and whether as citizens of Detroit we are well served. Our economy is drastically changing in ways that will, no doubt, re-define what we expect and what we must demand from our City government. If we want to succeed in the 21st Century global village, we need a government that is more dynamic, more nimble, and more responsive to the people of the City of Detroit and to the environment in which we now live. Our Charter, that was the foundation of our 20th Century government, has shown its wear in recent years and months. We need a new foundation to carry us into the 21st Century. Let’s build it now!!!!
Together we can
- Make government more responsive by electing our City Council members by district
- Change the dialogue between City Council and the Mayor by balancing the power between the legislative and executive branches
- State clearly in the Charter our priorities and our expectations for our elected officials and our public servants that will define what WE expect our City government to achieve on our behalf
- Re-structure City government to address the economic, social, environmental and financial realities of the 21st Century to avoid persistent deficits that shrink City services and starve our neighborhoods
*** LET’S BUILD A NEW FOUNDATION ***
